Welcome
With this site I hope to do my part in educating the population of the world to maintain more sustainable lives. This is a living site so expect many updates and changes as time goes on and I get more information together. Many crisis's in the coming years will determine if our species is capable of adapting to live within the means of the Earth. Sustainable practices will not be a choice but a requirement for survival. So without getting too dismal...

What is Sustainability?
Sustainability can be looked at from three directions. Social, Environmental and Economical. It is the balance between these three areas that will determine if a society is sustainable. Social and economic needs of humans must be met to provide a productive, healthy and fulfilling life for its participants. While doing this the environment must be conserved in such a way that biodiversity is not lost and resources are managed for indefinite use by future generations of humans as well as other organisms that inhabit the planet.

Why Education and Living by Example is Important
Though the task of making our society more sustainable is a big job, opportunities to educate are often overlooked. Awareness of what it means to be sustainable and methods to achieve this goal should be taught to children from an early age, both in school and in the home. To my knowledge very little is taught to students in school about how important it is to reduce their waste and understand how their actions influence the world around them. Since we cannot count on the education system to take on this role, sustainability practices must be taught in the home amongst family and friends.

This is where living by example becomes very important. If there is something you do in your home to be more Earth friendly and your child or friend sees you doing this, there is a good chance they will give it a try themselves. Before you know it, they have incorporated something new in their life to be more sustainable. This can then be passed on to their family and friends. Something that can make big change starts with a single person educating another person, whether actively or passively, and grows from there.
